Expedition Day Four
11th July 2025
High of 32℃
Our fourth day of the expedition found us leaving Mosta scout camp to Ghajn Tuffieha campsite, the national scout campsite, which is not pronounced in any way discernibly related to its spelling. Here, we had the absolute pleasure of meeting the 1st Quorma scout group, who welcomed us in to their activities – and meals! We retreated to the beach under the watchful eyes of our leaders, who didn’t seem at all disappointed that we turned up over an hour late and gave them time alone on the beach. Near the beach, we found a glorious food truck willing to offer us the “best burgers in Malta” as well as some challenge-completing traditional food and entirely living up to its claim.
Back at the campsite, we were invited to dinner and flag break with the local scouts. We took advantage of the time saved by not cooking dinner to hand wash our clothes. After a dinner wonderfully cooked by someone who wasn’t us, we were invited to a “chill out area” and swapped campfire songs before a disco, after which we had to put up tents in the dark using perseverance and a phone torch. Around this time, we also discovered an unavoidable change of plans for the next day, a problem we would overcome after a good night’s rest.
A Learning Experience
Here, we learnt the value of a restful day in a high intensity expedition, and the difference a few friendly faces can make. We also learnt just how dusty a mostly dry island can get after we made an arguably poor decision on where to lay our freshly washed clothes to dry. The unexpected change of plans also made for a lesson in stress management prior to sleeping, for which exhaustion played perhaps the greatest role.
